Mick McCarthy praises Troy Parrott after senior Republic of Ireland debut last night
Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy was full of praise for Troy Parrott’s performance on his full international debut last night.
As per the, McCarthy especially liked how Tottenham man Parrott dealt with some physical treatment from London rival West Ham defender Winston Reid in the 3-1 victory over New Zealand.
He : “Oh, he can handle himself at this level, I don’t doubt that. He was tracking back and he tackled their centre-half and he got all upset [Reid]. I know he’s been out, so you don’t want him to get injured – but well done, that’s what it’s about.
“Welcome to men’s football, because then he was getting a little bit bullied by him. But he stood up to it, and he’s done fine. He didn’t set the world on fire, but what he did I was really pleased with. He ran the channels, had a couple of chances… Everyone is desperate for him to score, but the keeper thwarted him. I was pleased, overall.”
TBR’s View – The early signs are good for Parrott in terms of competing in senior football
Many young strikers are able to score for fun in youth football but the more physical and cut-throat nature of the senior game can be a real struggle.
From the sounds of it, Parrott won’t be cowed by physical treatment or the odd setback in the senior game and once that first international goal goes in, he can expect many more to follow.
