Michel Vorm explains importance of multilingual Tottenham star, crucial for two summer signings
that Eric Dier’s ability to speak both Spanish and Portuguese makes him pivotal to the Tottenham defence.
Dier, 27, is a leader at Tottenham – as he closes in on 300 appearances for the club. Sunday’s win saw him clock up his 288th outing for Spurs.
England international Dier obviously joined Spurs from Sporting Lisbon for £4million (). He grew up in Portugal before returning to England.
Dier is finding himself a home in Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. On Sunday, despite his own goal, he was excellent in the 3-2 win against Newcastle.
Vorm says Dier is crucial to Tottenham because he can speak Portuguese to Emerson, and Spanish to Cristian Romero and Sergio Reguilon.

“The good thing about Eric Dier, is that he speaks Spanish and Portuguese,” Vorm said. “It makes it an easy thing with Emerson on the right.
“Romero next to him, and Sergio Reguilon on the left. The lack of language barrier means those four could be a very solid defence.”
Vorm on Dier: Tottenham star discovering his confidence and form
He looked crestfallen when the ball inadvertently hit him and went past Hugo Lloris. Embarrassing, but it did not affect the result.
Nuno’s pep talk after the match seemed to perk up the no.15. Right now, Dier is playing some of his best football in the past couple of seasons.
Losing his place in midfield before a brief resurgence under Jose Mourinho, Dier was still miles off the player that sparkled for England at Euro 2016.
Continuing to shine in his position, it will not be long before Gareth Southgate recalls him to the England side. An important player for Spurs.
