Michael Stewart says Rangers would improve if Steven Gerrard drops one player

that he thinks Rangers would improve if Steven Gerrard chose to drop striker Alfredo Morelos after another struggling display against Dundee United on Sunday afternoon at Tannadice.

Rangers made it 27 matches unbeaten in all competitions with a 2-1 win over Dundee United – though it was a performance that was far below the standard they have reached in recent matches. Morelos has gone almost three months without a league goal.

The Colombia international started again, but his last Premiership goal came against Hibernian in September. He missed numerous chances, dallying on a long ball towards the end of the match. He has just seven goals in 22 appearances.

Morelos has adapted his game somewhat, dropping deeper to help connect the midfield to attack – so he was always going to struggle reaching the 29 goals he got last season. But Stewart has delivered a damning verdict on the striker.

“The problem for Rangers is and Morelos as a whole is that he is not the talisman he was last season,” on the £30,000-a-week () striker. “Rangers as a team could comfortably have him out of the side and improve.

“[Kemar] Roofe could play up top, Joe Aribo could come in, I think the team would improve. Morelos doesn’t show anything as a team player for me. Before he was such a threat. His incident with his forearm undermines the work Rangers have done.”

TBR’s view – Who would replace Morelos, if he was to be dropped?

Stewart has been slightly harsh on Morelos. What the pundit has failed to realise is that the powerhouse striker’s new ability to be able to connect attacks and become more involved in build-up play has seen his goals – and shots -reduce.

That being said, Morelos has missed numerous chances. With that added creativity has seemingly seen him lose his goalscoring touch. The ability to have both would make him one of Europe’s best – just look at Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

If he was to be dropped, as Stewart suggests, Cedric Itten has the physicality to start up front and certainly showcased his ability against Lech Poznan. Roofe, meanwhile, is also able to play up front but has also shone just behind Morelos.
