Michael Stewart posts Celtic and Rangers verdicts, after Europa League matches

Celtic suffered a 3-1 home defeat to AC Milan while Rangers produced a masterclass to beat Standard Liege 2-0 away from home in Belgium – and Michael Stewart has given his verdicts on Twitter after both matches.

Rangers kicked off earlier on during Thursday night and produced a stunning effort to beat an impressive Liege in monsoon-like conditions. An early handball saw James Tavernier score his ninth of the season from the penalty spot.

Kemar Roofe then netted arguably the best goal of the competition already, with a strike from inside his own half. It was not as good for Celtic, though, who were easily beaten by Milan – despite a header from Mo Elyounoussi.

BBC Sportscene pundit Stewart reacted to both results on Twitter, initially praising Rangers for their efforts in Belgium – before criticising Celtic and stating that Neil Lennon reverting to a back four improved the Hoops.

TBR’s view – What is the difference between the two sides?

Right now, Rangers have their tails up and Celtic look flat. The difference was evident at Parkhead on Saturday, as the Gers ran out 2-0 winners – though it must be said Celtic are missing crucial players including Odsonne Edouard.

Nevertheless, it was clear that Steven Gerrard’s side have been playing the same way for more than two seasons – which is evident on the pitch. Celtic, meanwhile, look like a bunch of individuals thrown together by Lennon.

Milan are a much better side than Liege, but Celtic’s performance was far below Rangers’ efforts. Lennon needs to get his side firing on all cylinders sooner, rather than later.
