Michael Skubala reacts to Wilfried Gnonto’s performance for Leeds’ U21s
Leeds United under-21 boss Michael Skubala that he thought that Wilfried Gnonto was a threat throughout his performance against Sunderland on Monday as the forward scored the only goal in the win.
Leeds are being patient with Gnonto. The Italy international is yet to make his first-team debut for Jesse Marsch’s side. In fact, the only senior side he has represented since his move to Elland Road has been Italy.

Gnonto was an unused substitute on Sunday at Selhurst Park. So it was no surprise to see the 18-year-old line up for the under-21s at the Stadium of Light on Monday.
And he has now opened his account for the Whites. Gnonto scored the only goal, driving the ball home from close range after some impressive close control inside the box.

Leeds fans will certainly be excited to have seen Gnonto get on the scoresheet. And Skubala suggested that he has taken another step forward with his performance on Monday.
“It’s great for his confidence to get off the mark,” . “We’re getting him through 90 minutes all the time. Physically, it was a good test for him today. He had to work hard. But I thought he was a threat going forward again. And he’s got his goal so he’s pleased as punch.”
Leeds have plenty of attacking options knocking on Marsch’s door right now. Obviously, Joe Gelhardt has been a first-team player for most of the last 12 months. Sam Greenwood is in a similar boat.
Sonny Perkins failed to score for the first time this season in Monday’s game. Mateo Joseph has also been in impressive form so far.
The fans have wanted to see Gnonto get his chance. It says a lot that Roberto Mancini has put his faith in the teenager with the national team.
But he does still appear to be a work in progress. And Marsch is clearly wary of expecting too much too soon.
He does have the attributes to make an impact if he does get his chance. And should Leeds’ form continue, it may not be too long before that opportunity comes his way.
