Michael Owen names difference between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid

Michael Owen has claimed that the two goalkeepers were the main difference between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

The Reds were beaten 3-2 at Anfield on the night by Spanish opposition Atletico, who have qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals with a 4-2 aggregate victory over last season’s winners.

Georginio Wijnaldum’s header sent the game into extra-time with the teams level at 1-1 on aggregate and it was a 90 minutes where Jurgen Klopp’s side dominated proceedings.

Roberto Firmino netted early in extra-time to put the Merseyside club in front of the last 16 tie, but Atletico scored through Marcos Llorente (two) and Alvaro Morata on the break to snatch it.

Owen picked out the two shot-stoppers as the main difference on the night.

Atletico’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak was a colossus in net all night for the Spanish visitors, as he dominated aerial balls into the box and produced a number of stunning reflex saves.

Meanwhile, Adrian was far less busy in his goal but gave away possession in the build-up to Llorente’s goal and may have felt he could have done better with all three goals.

“They (Liverpool) were absolutely outstanding for 90 minutes I thought tonight. The difference probably between the two sides was the goalkeepers,”

TBR’s View:

Adrian has proven he’s a decent number two option in goal for Liverpool, but there is no doubt there number one Alisson Becker was a big miss in midweek through injury.

It’s hard to imagine Alisson being beaten by any of the three goals that Atletico scored on the night, while at the other end of the pitch Oblak was performing heroics for his side.

Liverpool are now left with just the Premier League fixtures in their season, but they can focus on getting over the line for an inevitable title and they have proven their European pedigree in the last two campaigns with back-to-back finals.
