Michael Beale says Rangers have a ‘top’ player in their ranks who’s ‘low maintenance and high output’

Glasgow Rangers first-team coach Michael Beale has waxed lyrical about Ibrox midfielder Steven Davis, a “top” player who’s “low maintenance and high output”.

The 36-year-old’s place in the Rangers history books has been assured thanks to his incredible service for the Ibrox club, and he’s showing no signs of stopping either.

The boyhood Bear initially joined the Gers on loan in January 2008 before signing permanently from Fulham that summer.

Davis’ first spell at Ibrox was incredibly fruitful as he lifted three Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups, three Scottish League Cups and reached the UEFA Cup final.

A spell at Southampton followed, and in 2019, with Rangers back in the Scottish Premiership, he rejoined the Ibrox side – again, first on loan, before signing permanently.

This season, Davis has made 41 appearances for the Light Blues in all competitions, helping Steven Gerrard’s side to title number 55.

And Beale insists Rangers couldn’t have won the Scottish Premiership crown without Davis, one of the mainstays of the team along with Glen Kamara.

“Anyone who has worked with Steven Davis knows he’s low maintenance and high output in terms of around the place,” he told Rangers TV, as transcribed by the .

“He takes ownership of his development, he leads by example every day… he’s just an all round top fella.

“He’s playing some of the best football of his career right now. I knew that when we played Porto last year and they man-marked him. The respect they gave him shows the level he’s playing at.

“When I look at him this season, he’s the elder statesmen of our midfield but I’d say he’s got the youngest legs, which I’d say is a good trait to have at his age.

“He’s been essential this year. The mainstays in midfield have been himself and Glen Kamara, they’ve both been fantastic.”

Davis has also become the UK’s most capped player, picking up his 126th cap in Northern Ireland’s goalless draw with Bulgaria at Windsor Park on Wednesday night.

He has surpassed England legend Peter Shilton, the previous record holder on 125 caps, and is now level with Slovakia icon Marek Hamsik and Italy legend Paolo Maldini.

There can’t really be much added to what Davis’ peers have said about him – he is a superb player and professional, and Rangers are lucky to have him.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see him play for a few more years, much like Jermain Defoe – and hopefully he’ll be able to help the Gers to more silverware this season and beyond.
