Michael Ball offers interesting way in which Silva can help Calvert-Lewin thrive at Everton

Former Everton defender Michael Ball has come up with an intriguing suggestion as to how Marco Silva can get the best out of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Goodison Park.

The 22-year-old was handed a third consecutive start in all competitions against Manchester City at the weekend having got the nod against Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup, and Sheffield United in the league.

Across the three games Calvert-Lewin helped himself to four goals, and is surely in a good position to keep his place in the side for this weekend’s visit to Burnley.

Despite his decent four-goal haul, Calvert-Lewin hasn’t convinced everybody, with some pining for the return of lively youngster Moise Kean.

Some upporters appear to be either one or the other, but Ball reckons Silva should consider doing away with his usual 4-2-3-1 system and using the youngsters as a pairing.

, he said: “Trying to pinpoint one striker and make sure he’s free when they’re against four defenders, it’s difficult. If we put another body in there, you’re asking questions and hopefully we’ll put the ball in the back of the net a bit more.

“If we get Moise Kean alongside him to help him, the crowd might even respond a little bit more to that extra body up front.

“I think the best way Marco Silva can help him [Calvert-Lewin] do that is by playing someone else alongside him.”

TBR’s view

This is not the worst suggestion in the world from Ball, with Everton clearly needing to be more ruthless.

Calvert-Lewin does work very hard for the team, which often comes at the expense of being prolific.

Kean, yet to score for his new club, has shown glimpses of real quality but there is something missing with him.

One gets the idea that maybe together, they could get the best out of one another and perhaps make up for what the other lacks – it would obviously require Silva to change formation though, something he seems quite reluctant to do.
