Micah Richards says he rates Tottenham player, but he is costing Spurs points

that he rates Tottenham Hotspur right-back Serge Aurier despite Sunday’s defeat to Manchester United – but made it clear that the Ivorian ace is costing his side points as Spurs lost 3-1.

Aurier, 28, was handed his first start for Tottenham in six Premier League matches on Sunday as the Ivory Coast captain has been made to wait for a chance. He has only made the bench once in the previous five league games.

The ex-PSG man, who has clocked up 105 appearances for Spurs since joining the club in the summer of 2017, struggled to help Spurs win – and was caught out of position on numerous occasions. His future is in doubt, with a year left to run on his contract.

Included in the side for his attacking abilities, Aurier offered little going forward as well as mistakes at the back. Asked about the defender, Richards spoke of how he believes Aurier is a good player – but that he is letting the Tottenham side down.

“He’s cheating. I used to do the same myself, it is lazy. You’re gambling that the keeper is going to get the ball and you can start an attack. I know full-backs now are more known for going forwar,” Richards claimed.

“But he is costing his team, every single time he plays – and I rate him. I think he is a good player,” “I do rate him, honestly. It’s just that lack of concentration.”

TBR’s view – Aurier should be sold this summer

Aurier has not been the player Spurs would have hoped for when they signed him four years ago, and Matt Doherty has struggled since swapping Wolves for North London. Spurs need a new right-back, and they need both funds – and the room to work.

His contract is due to expire in 2022. So, this summer represents the last chance for Spurs to bring in some cash for his signature – if they are not to extend his current deal. Bringing in some cash, they can then use that to replace him. A no-brainer.
