The fixture saw Aurier handed a rare chance to start this season. The 27-year-old has been knocked down the pecking order by Matt Doherty. But his absence presented an opportunity to the Ivory Coast international.

Meanwhile, Reguilon continues to catch the eye following his summer switch from Real Madrid. The left-back has been a revelation for much of the campaign.

And Richards felt that both players were pivotal in ensuring that Spurs did manage to keep City quiet when Pep Guardiola’s men got forward.

“[Aurier] deserves a bit of credit because he was up against two good wingers today and he dealt with it really well. But Reguilon, he looks like he can defend and attack,” .

“I’ve played full-back so I can appreciate a good position. And those two today were very, very good.”

, no player won more tackles than Aurier. The pair also made seven clearances between them.

Aurier – who cost £23 million (via ) – was also the player who won most aerial duels, winning three. No other Tottenham player managed more than one.

He arguably still has plenty of work to do to ensure that Doherty stays out of the side for a little longer once he is back available. But, as Richards suggests, he deserves the plaudits coming his way for how he stepped up on Saturday.
