Micah Richards predicts who he thinks will win the Champions League this season
Arsenal and Manchester City are the two English sides who have made it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and Micah Richards has backed one team to win it.
The draw for the quarter-finals is expected to take place this morning. All eyes will be on who Arsenal and Manchester City will come up against – there’s even a chance the two Premier League sides could face each other.
Micah Richards says Manchester City are favourites to win the Champions League over Arsenal
The Champions League is the biggest trophy you can win in Europe, and Manchester City experienced that for the first time last season.
Pep Guardiola‘s side beat Inter Milan in the final to complete their treble, and it really was a magnificent achievement.
Arsenal, on the other hand, have never won the Champions League. They came close in 2006 but were beaten by Barcelona after Jens Lehmann received an early red card.
Mikel Arteta‘s side are dreaming of going all the way this year after making it into the quarter-finals for the first time in 14 years.
In a two-legged tie, they definitely have a chance, but Micah Richards believes Manchester City are the favourites because of their incredible squad.
Speaking on the , he said: “Man City are the team to beat and because Arsenal are doing so well in the league, you think ‘okay, we’re not probably as good as Man City in terms of the whole squad’, but in a couple of one-off games, could they do it?
“Everyone will fancy themselves in the last eight now.'”
“I think City are the best team in the competition but I do believe it could go anywhere. If Man City were to get Real Madrid in the quarters, you know what Real Madrid can do. A couple of years ago, at their place, they beat PSG when they were losing, they beat Chelsea when they were losing, the comeback against Man City as well.
“So, anything can happen in the Champions League. But, in terms of squad, I would say Man City are probably the favourites.”
Arsenal have an outside chance of winning the Champions League
Arsenal are a fantastic team and on their day, they are capable of beating any side in Europe, including Barcelona, who they lost to nearly 18 years ago
The Gunners have had a brilliant season. They are currently on top of the Premier League table and their performances since the turn of the year have been better than almost every other team in the world.
Mikel Arteta will back his side to go all the way in the Champions League, but they’re definitely not the favourites to win the competition – Manchester City are.
Real Madrid are up there as well having won it on 14 occasions, while Bayern Munich, as bad as they have been this season, can never be underestimated.
Arsenal have what it takes to beat any team left in the Champions League, but if we’re talking about winning the competition, we would only give them an outside chance.
