Mendy and James react as 23-year-old shines during Chelsea win

Malang Sarr made his Premier League debut for Chelsea on Saturday. The Blues defeated Brentford 1-0 thanks to a strike by Ben Chilwell. Thomas Tuchel’s men went top of the league and afterwards, Edouard Mendy and Reece James praised Sarr on Instagram.

The French defender has had to wait for his Chelsea debut. After signing from Nice, he was sent on loan to Porto by Frank Lampard. Now, he’s back at Stamford Bridge and looking to make an impact.

Sarr played in the Carabao Cup against Aston Villa last month. He helped the team to a penalty shootout victory but has struggled to get involved in the Premier League.

Before Saturday he’d failed to make a matchday squad in the league campaign. Based on his showing at the Brentford Community Stadium, it might not be such a long wait for his next outing.

The 22-year-old played superbly well in the win and will have caught the eye of Tuchel. Ahead of Chelsea’s next game, the French boss now has something of a selection headache.

What have Mendy and James said about Chelsea defender Sarr?

Mendy was in standout form himself. He made several top saves to thwart the threat of Brentford’s attackers. The clean sheet was just the tonic for Chelsea as they roared to the summit of the Premier League.

He used just a single French word to sum up the performance of Sarr. He wrote ‘Fier’ which translates to proud in English.

James used one word also. He chose the word ‘beast’ in a nod towards his robust defensive display which saw him fly into tackles and put his body on the line.

Sarr will hope that his next Chelsea performance isn’t so far in the future. The talent certainly did his chances no harm at all with a strong showing against the Premier League newcomers.
