The media was left blown away by Allan McGregor after the Rangers goalkeeper’s ‘incredible’ performance in their latest Champions League tie at Ibrox on Wednesday.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men suffered another heavy defeat and have now gone three games without a goal. However, Rangers were so much better against Napoli at Ibrox.
The Gers were electric at times in the first-half and created some brilliant opportunities. Ultimately however, they were punished in the second-half.
James Sands gave away a penalty early on after the break. And in the process, the centre-back collected a second yellow card.
But when Rangers were left with a mountain to climb, McGregor came to their rescue. The 40-year-old saved Piotr Zielinski’s penalty.
And he repeated the trick moments later. Napoli were bizarrely given the chance to retake the kick. The rebound from the initial save was tapped home by a player encroaching in the box.
Nevertheless, McGregor guessed right again and sent Ibrox into a frenzy with another save.
Unfortunately, his brilliance was not enough to earn Rangers a share of the points. Napoli were awarded another penalty and scored twice more in the final moments to win 3-0.
Rangers were much better than they had been in the previous two games. And clearly, the return of McGregor left an impression on many. Certainly, some media outlets will be left baffled if Jon McLaughlin regains the number one spot upon his return from injury. .
“Still hard to fathom how van Bronckhorst decided to drop the 40-year-old but surely can be no doubt now he’s best man for the job after his incredible double penalty stop. So close to making it a treble as Politano rammed home from the spot,” the Daily Record wrote.
Allan McGregor incredible for Rangers
McGregor had some difficult moments last season. But he is continuing to prove that he still has the potential to produce world-class performances.
You can understand why van Bronckhorst wanted to give McLaughlin the stage to take the number one spot at the start of the season. But he is surely asking for trouble if he now takes McGregor out of the side at the earliest opportunity.
