Mauricio Pochettino’s praise illustrates the importance of Tottenham’s Cardiff performance

Tottenham Hotspur swept away Cardiff City 3-0 on New Year’s Day, with goals from Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son, and Christian Eriksen granting Spurs victory.

In the aftermath of the match, Mauricio Pochettino effusively praised his team’s performance over the Premier League strugglers, illustrating the importance of Tottenham’s win amid their recent slip-up.

Tottenham surged into contention for the Premier League title with a run of form that culminated in a 6-2 win over Everton and a 5-0 thrashing of Bournemouth.

Yet in their final fixture of 2018, Spurs were shocked at Wembley by Wolves, losing 3-1 despite taking the lead in the first half.

The reaction of Pochettino’s men was closely watched, and Tottenham coolly dispelled their doubters with a comfortable away win on Tuesday.

In comments reported by the , Mauricio Pochettino described the significance of the victory, utilising terms that one would rarely expect from a triumph over Cardiff.

“I think it was a massive victory, a massive three points to make us believe that little more, in our possibility to be in a very good position in the table,” Pochettino said. “I think it was so important to start the new year with a victory, away from home, at a very difficult place.”

Tottenham’s 3-0 waltz in Wales has instilled belief among the squad that the north Londoners can still genuinely challenge for the league, a feeling reflected by Mauricio Pochettino’s upbeat post-match comments.
