Mauricio Pochettino’s comments spell the end of the road for Tottenham’s £17 million signing Vincent Janssen
Tottenham Hotspur striker Vincent Janssen was in action on Sunday, notching a for the U-23 side in one of his first Spurs appearances since 2017.
But Mauricio Pochettino closed the door on a potential first team return for the Dutchman, with the manager’s post-match comments spelling the end of the road for Janssen’s Tottenham career.
Signed in 2016 for a £17 million, Janssen was seen as an enticing attacking option after lighting up the Eredivisie for AZ Alkmaar.
Yet the striker never translated his excellent form in the Dutch league over to north London, struggling for game time and goals while at Tottenham.
A loan spell to Fenerbahce last season followed, but injury unfortunately afflicted Janssen’s time in Turkey and later scuppered a permanent deal.
Now back at Spurs, some had speculated the striker could work his way back into Pochettino’s plans and engineer an unlikely comeback.
After the Manchester United defeat, however, Pochettino was directly asked whether Janssen had an opportunity to get back into the Spurs lineup.
The manager’s response?
“No, he is not in my plans,” Pochettino told .
The harsh verdict of Mauricio Pochettino surely ends the Tottenham career of Vincent Janssen, who appears set to leave north London after two and a half years, 39 appearances, and just six goals.
