Mauricio Pochettino once explained why he didn’t sign reported Newcastle United target Xherdan Shaqiri
Newcastle United have been linked with a potential move for Liverpool playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri this week.
that the Swiss international is on the Toon’s wishlist for after the completion of a takeover by a Saudi-backed consortium.
It would certainly be an eye-catching move for Newcastle, who are also starting to look at new managers to lead the club into a new era.
One such name is Mauricio Pochettino. As reported by several sources in recent days and weeks, the former Tottenham man is considered an option for the role currently occupied by Steve Bruce at St James’ Park he is the new owners’ number one target.
Which is interesting when it comes to Shaqiri, as Pochettino has previously rejected the chance to sign him.
It was whilst at Tottenham when the North London club were being linked with a move to bring Shaqiri to England from Inter Milan.
In the end, Stoke City signed him for a club-record fee of £12 million. As Pochettino later that whilst Shaqiri is a ‘very good player’ Stoke’s spending spree that summer, which also saw Ibrahim Afellay, Glen Johnson, and Gianelli Imbula arrive, was not part of Tottenham’s philosophy.
“I think their activity was high and they invested a lot of money.
“The last signing was Shaqiri, a very good player, but every club has their philosophy and for us, I’m very happy with the way that we work.”
However, at Newcastle, Pochettino will likely have far more spending power if he did decide to take the role at St James’ Park.
Shaqiri could, therefore, be a player that, in the past, he might have envied during his time at Spurs but known there was never any point pursuing.
If he heads to St James’ Park, Pochettino is likely to have increased spending power. At which point, making a move for the £25 million valued Shaqiri could become a possibility.
