Mauricio Pochettino comments suggest Tottenham Hotspur will stick by Juan Foyth
Tottenham Hotspur ended up being fortunate to pick up a win in the Premier League yesterday. Spurs defeated Wolves 3-2, but at one point were 3-0 up. The game started to turn when Juan Foyth gave away a penalty. Ruben Neves slotted it away for 3-1.
It was the Argentine’s Premier League debut and he would have been disappointed to give away a penalty. To then do it again, would have been doubly hard to take. Foyth gave away a second penalty later in the half, this time Raul Jimenez slotting away for 3-2.
On paper, it was certainly a tough day at the office for the Argentine. But, speaking to the press after the game, Mauricio Pochettino defended his compatriot.
“I think his performance was very good. I am happy, but when you are a centre-back you can be involved and then it’s an action and then in the second half, they pushed a lot, trying to turn the result. But of course that situation happened and I think he’s clever and he’s going to learn. But I’m happy, very happy. His performance was very good.”
Such comments should not be understated. Tottenham have something of a future problem at the back. Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are approaching the end of their Tottenham contracts and Spurs would be lacking at the back if either left.
It has seen some big names linked with the club. All the players being linked come with massive price-tags.
Tottenham try to keep spending to a minimum and Foyth clearly has the backing of his manager. If Tottenham can get a commitment from one of the Belgian duo, along with Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier, Tottenham might not be spending millions on a new centre-back. Instead, it would be unsurprising if Spurs give Foyth his chance to shine.
