Matthew Upson says Aston Villa have pulled off a ‘shrewd’ signing in £15m star
Aston Villa have made several fantastic signings ever since Monchi was hired as President of Football Operations in June 2023.
The Spaniard has overseen the captures of stars such as Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres, Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen and Morgan Rogers since arriving at Villa Park.
Monchi’s appointment has coincided with a golden period for the Villans – as far as the 21st century is concerned – with his efforts helping Aston Villa qualify for the UEFA Champions League under Unai Emery last season, while also sitting fourth in the Premier League this term after eight games.

Now, the signing of one of the aforementioned players has been placed under the spotlight by Matthew Upson.
Matthew Upson hails Aston Villa for signing Morgan Rogers
After Aston Villa recorded a 2-0 win over Bologna in the UEFA Champions League to go top of the table, Upson praised the Villans for bringing Rogers to Villa Park.
The 45-year-old told : “Morgan Rogers is another piece of shrewd recruitment from Aston Villa. They’ve seen a player who fits the bill, the manager believes he can develop him and they’ve gone and got him.”
Aston Villa paid just to sign the 22-year-old from Middlesbrough back in January after he shone in the Championship, and less than 12 months later, he is already performing like a £50m footballer.
Darren Bent even believes Rogers is as talented as Cole Palmer – which speaks volumes given how much the England international has blossomed since swapping Manchester City for Chelsea.

The Aston Villa No.27 may only have five goals and four assists to his name in 27 appearances under Emery so far, but it is his intelligence in and out of possession which we find most impressive – his movement seems to open up all kinds of opportunities for the Villans in attack.
It is this intelligence that has previously led Jamie Redknapp to compare Rogers to Jude Bellingham – along with the England U21 international’s unerring ability to drive forward with the ball.
Unai Emery must be delighted with how Aston Villa have recruited
Even before Monchi arrived in the Midlands, Aston Villa were savvy operators, signing Boubacar Kamara on a free transfer, Emiliano Martinez for just £17m and Jhon Duran for only £18m.
This recruitment has led to an immense amount of squad depth for Emery, who was able to bring stars such as Ollie Watkins, Ross Barkley, Jacob Ramsey, Jaden Philogene and Kamara off the bench against Bologna, with talents like Lucas Digne and Emiliano Buendia not even coming on.
Aston Villa have a remarkable squad, and with strength in depth like this, it would not surprise us one bit if the Villans won a trophy this season.
