Matteo Guendouzi could become Marseille’s captain now, two years after Arteta pushed him out of Arsenal
Just over two years after Mikel Arteta decided he didn’t want Matteo Guendouzi at Arsenal, the Frenchman could become the captain of Olympique Marseille.
The Gunners boss and Guendouzi had a huge fall-out after a game against Brighton in June 2020. Arteta decided he didn’t want the midfielder anymore, and that brought an end to his Arsenal career. Now, he’s a star at Marseille.
Matteo Guendouzi could become Marseille’s captain now
Guendouzi’s talent has never been in question. In his first season at Arsenal, he played 48 times in all competitions. He was arguably the best young midfielder in the country, and Gunners fans absolutely loved him.
However, after his attitude was viewed as a problem, he was done at Arsenal. Guendouzi spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Hertha Berlin and the following campaign at Marseille. The Ligue 1 giants made that move permanent this summer for a fee of just £9 million ().
There were a lot of moans and groans from Arsenal fans when the deal was announced, but all of that came to an end when reports emerged that Guendouzi had fallen out with new Marseille boss Igor Tudor.
The two reportedly had a Guendouzi “hitting the showers, packing up his things and apparently leaving the stadium, as he didn’t appear again for the second half.”
That news convinced many Arsenal fans that Arteta was right to get rid of Guendouzi. However, things have completely changed now.
The 23-year-old, branded as ‘exceptional’, is one of Marseille’s most important players.
He and Tudor trust each other now – so much so that he’s now a contender to become the next club captain. Guendouzi was even given the armband in Marseille’s 2-1 win over Lille over the weekend. ( via )

If Guendouzi is indeed named as the captain of a Champions League club as big as Marseille, it would be a fantastic achievement for someone so young.
Even though the talent was always there, many people believed that Guendouzi wouldn’t get very far in his career because of the poor attitude that cost him his place at Arsenal.
Those thoughts are completely justified as well, as Arteta wasn’t the only manager he has had problems with over the course of his career as a professional footballer.
That, however, becomes inconsequential when he plays for a manager who’s willing to tolerate his antics. He’s found the perfect man in Tudor, and it looks like he’s all set to become Marseille’s leader for the foreseeable future now.
