Matt Upson confident West Ham will avoid relegation under David Moyes
Matt Upson is confident that West Ham will avoid relegation this season from the Premier League with David Moyes at the helm.
After sacking Manuel Pellegrini midway through the season, the Hammers turned to experienced Scotsman Moyes and he agreed to take charge at the London Stadium for a second spell.
He started with an emphatic 4-0 league win over Bournemouth and an FA Cup victory against Gillingham, but they did lose to Sheffield United last Friday in their previous outing.
It means that they sit 16th in the league table as it stands and are only a point above the relegation places.
Ex-West Ham defender Upson believes that Moyes will guide the club to safety and can already spot a difference on the pitch.
But he did criticise attacking duo Sebastien Haller and Felipe Anderson for their performances in the 1-0 loss to Sheffield United, as neither were able to make a serious difference going forward.
“I was at Sheffield last Friday and they (West Ham) were much better, much more organised. Anderson, Haller, let them down really in terms of contributing their role and creative quality wasn’t good enough,”
“But everywhere else across the pitch they were better and I think they will slowly get better and David Moyes will keep them in the Prem.”
TBR’s View:
Moyes has guided West Ham away from trouble before in the past and he’s certainly got a quality group of players that should be nowhere near a relegation fight.
Anderson and Haller both scored in the recent win against Bournemouth, but struggled to make a serious impact against Sheffield United.
The attackers are going to be vital in the club’s success going forward and the pair of them have the individual quality to shine in the Premier League.
Anderson, 26, has seen his levels drop off this campaign, but the left-winger has shown in the past his ability and he’s got to get back to being confident in the final third.
Meanwhile, 25-year-old striker Haller is still fairly inconsistent during his debut season in England, but Moyes needs to unlock his full goalscoring potential.
