Matt Polster says Rangers have a young player who’s amazing in training, tips him for stardom
Glasgow Rangers full-back Nathan Patterson has been tipped by Matt Polster to enjoy a successful Ibrox career after shining for Steven Gerrard’s side.
The Auchenhowie prodigy was in and around the Rangers first team last season and has built on it this term, particularly in wake of James Tavernier’s injury.
To date, Patterson has made 16 senior appearances for Rangers, 14 of which have come this season, including seven in the Scottish Premiership and five in the Europa League.
The 19-year-old has been doing so well that calls for him to be included in Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for the upcoming European Championships have been growing by the week.
Polster, who was on Rangers’ books between 2019 and 2020, witnessed the Patterson emerge through the ranks at Auchenhowie during his time with Steven Gerrard’s side.
The American has no doubt that his former teammate can continue to go from strength to strength next season.
“I was training with him quite a bit and he is a player with a lot of talent and he has shown this season that he has done really, really well,” Polster told .
“He stepped into that role when Tav was injured and took on that responsibility. He has done really well and he has proven to the group that he can play at that level.
“He is a young boy so I am sure he will be able to keep improving on that and he has got a pretty level head as well so I can only see him going further.
“Injuries can happen in football, but Tav literally never got injured when I was there so it was very tough to ever get a chance. It was difficult.
“When he was out, I thought in those moments I did well but it was never really long enough to implement myself within the group on a consistent basis.
“Nathan has done incredibly well, he has come in immediately when Tav was out and proved himself that he can play at that level.
“He has a really level head, he is committed and he wants to push himself. I know he can compete and fight for that position.
“He is determined and I could tell that from training with him when he was with us.”
TBR View:
Patterson is a young talent of the highest calibre who’s destined for a bright future in the game, and no doubt he’ll take over from Tavernier in years to come.
However, there’s a bit of a dilemma at the minute in that Tavernier is doing so well and remains at the top of his game, not to mention he’s Rangers’ captain.
It’s certainly a good dilemma for Gerrard to have, but he’ll have plenty to ponder in the off-season and beyond in terms of how to ensure both get sufficient game time.
