Matt Doherty would give Everton perfect long-term wing-back pairing for new formation

Marco Silva has been trialling a new formation at Everton in the past few games.

With three central defenders and wing-backs, Silva’s new formation seems to suit his players better.

Lucas Digne’s defensive work has been questionable at times this season but there are few full-backs better at attacking than the Frenchman.

At right-wing-back, Seamus Coleman is thriving with less defensive responsibility but Silva will already be eyeing a replacement for the ageing Irishman.

When Silva scours the market, Matt Doherty’s name should crop up as the ideal target.

The Republic of Ireland international’s attacking influence has been eye-catching, with three goals and four assists in 21 league games.

With over 600 passes completed and 26 key passes, , Doherty is proving to be a handful going forward.

Defensively, the 26-year-old has been impressive too. , Doherty has made 37 tackles, 37 interceptions, 41 blocks and 56 clearances in 21 Premier League outings.

Everton must go all out with their attempts to sign Doherty, who is the natural successor for Coleman for the Toffees and for the Republic of Ireland.

With Doherty and Digne as a wing-back pairing, Silva would have two ideal players in this department for many years to come.
