One to Watch: Mason Mount’s early-season Derby form suggests he’s ready for the Premier League

Mason Mount’s blistering start to the SkyBet Championship season has been met with praise from Derby County manager Frank Lampard.

The ex-Chelsea legend spoke glowingly of Mount after the teenage midfielder scored once and assisted another in the Rams’ 2-0 win over Preston North End.

“He can be really good, he can be top, top level because he’s 19 and plays with ability and quality, technically he’s brilliant but also his work-rate shouldn’t go unnoticed,” .

“He’s so quick to leave midfield to go and press people whether it be defenders or deep-lying midfield players which makes you the all-round midfield player.

“He should never be considered a No 10 because there’s so much more to his game but he’ll score goals like a No 10.

“At some stage he will go back to Chelsea, I don’t want to think about that now, but when he does I think he’s going to be a contender.”

Mount really has been excellent. Currently, he is ranked top ten in the league in terms of total key passes, securing his first assist on the weekend after a nice lofted corner was nodded home by team-mate Richard Keogh.

There was a feeling before the start of the season that Mount may be ready for a level above the Championship.

That might still be the case, but Lampard’s willingness to give the Englishman a key role as the centre-piece of his system as a dynamic midfielder with license to get forward is perfect for him.

Lampard, after all, is a man that knows that role perfectly.

The retired Premier League star scored 211 career goals from midfield, with his ability to arrive into the penalty box at the perfect moment a quality that he should be able to help Mount continue to improve.

Mount is already showing a proficiency in doing so – scoring double digits from midfield for Vitesse Arnhem last season.

If he is able to do that again this season, Derby’s promotion push will be a force.
