Martin Skrtel snub is a blessing in disguise for Rangers as Mexer is a better option

Martin Skrtel has reportedly turned down the chance to join Rangers. , Fenerbahce centre-back Skrtel has rejected the opportunity to reunite with former Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.

Instead, the Slovakian could extend his deal at Fenerbahce. The Turkish Super Lig side would be willing to offer Skrtel significantly more money than Rangers.

But Skrtel’s snub could be a blessing in disguise. The veteran defender turns 35 next season and Rangers should be looking at younger players.

Instead, the Gers can focus on signing Mexer. The 30-year-old was recently spotted posing with Gerrard, .

Mexer is also a central defender and he plays for Ligue 1 side Rennes. After playing over 40 games this season, Mexer could be moving to Scotland.

The 46-cap Mozambique international is a younger (and probably cheaper) version of Skrtel. Rangers do need a new centre-back and Mexer would be a better option.

With Joe Worrall returning to Nottingham Forest and Gareth McAuley’s contract expiring, Rangers need another centre-half. Mexer fits the bill as Skrtel would only be a stop-gap due to his age.

Although Skrtel’s snub will be disappointing, it could work out well. This failed transfer attempt could aid Rangers’ hopes of signing Mexer.
