Martin Keown suggests Duncan Ferguson has ‘woken up a sleeping giant’ at Everton

Everton defeated Chelsea 3-1 at the weekend under the guidance of an inspiring caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson.

The club legend was instrumental in turning the player’s recent turgid performances into what was easily Everton’s best performance of the season.

It was not unnoticed by one pundit and former Everton player. Martin Keown, who spent four seasons at Goodison Park, when he spoke about the remarkable change in performance from the Everton players.

“I do feel he’s woken up a sleeping giant here.  The club, the players they all came to life. They played a 4-4-2 system, binned their back five and they were all in contact with one another.

“Right from the off they’re snapping into tackles, their aggressive, their closing the door. It was really impressive to see. They were swarming around their opponents. I have never seen a team change so much.”

It was a fantastic occasion for ‘Big Dunc’ and Everton fans will have been ecstatic at the result over the weekend.

However, it does not look like Everton are currently considering Ferguson for the role full-time and that might mean this remains something of a one-off.

But what is clear is that Ferguson needs to have an increasing influence behind the scenes considering the clear motivation he can have on the players.

Everton fans will just hope that continues against Manchester United this week.
