Martin Keown praises Arsenal defender David Luiz for FA Cup display

Martin Keown praised Arsenal defender David Luiz following his performance in the FA Cup victory over Portsmouth.

The 32-year-old captained an inexperienced Gunner side on the night and helped them book their spot in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Manager Mikel Arteta made nine changes to his starting line up on Monday night and watched his side beat League One opposition Portsmouth 2-0 at Fratton Park.

Arsenal defender Sokratis fired in a volley on the stroke of half-time to give the visitors the lead, before young striker Eddie Nketiah doubled the advantage early in the second-half with a close-range finish.

After being eliminated from the Europa League last week, it was crucial they did the business against a Portsmouth outfit sat third in League One.

Keown gave centre-back Luiz a special mention for his display on the night.

“He (Luis) is the leader, he is the most decorated player in the team with the trophies that he’s won primarily at Chelsea. He’s come out and performed very well here tonight,”

TBR’s View:

Luiz put in a solid display in the heart of defence against Portsmouth and it was fairly impressive the way he guided some of his younger teammates through the contest by being a vocal leader.

There is no doubt the South American is a big character in the dressing room and does possess the kind of pedigree that many other players lack.

Arsenal’s January addition Pablo Mari impressed alongside him at centre-back against Portsmouth and it will be interesting to see if Arteta looks at using the combination moving forward in the league.
