Martin Keown expects Tottenham to release player

Martin Keown has told TalkSPORT (Friday, 12.25pm) that he expects Tottenham Hotspur to release Danny Rose after the left-back will reportedly be left out of the club’s first-team and reserve squads – and follow West Ham’s lead on Jack Wilshere.

West Ham released Wilshere on deadline day with the 28-year-old struggling to get back into the Hammers side, despite claiming in a statement that he has been fit for the majority of 2020. The £60k-a-week man () is now a free agent.

Rose is set to be left out of Tottenham’s 25-man Premier League and Europa League squads, with Spurs bringing in Sergio Reguilon to act as competition for Welsh ace Ben Davies. Ryan Sessegnon has joined Hoffenheim on loan.

He has until October 16 to earn a move away from Spurs to a Championship club, with his contract expiring next summer. His other option is to reach an agreement with Spurs to terminate his current deal, and Keown is expecting that to happen.

Asked if Rose would get the Wilshere treatment, Keown said: “He wants to play. It is only a matter of time before he moves on, so yeah [he could cancel his contract]. He stood up to Mourinho, and he is getting even further away from the first team.”

TBR’s view – Rose needs to be released

The former Leeds man will be confident he can still do a job at a club that is above the Championship. So his only option is to terminate his contract and earn a permanent move elsewhere, perhaps going abroad.

Genoa have been linked with a move of late and perhaps the Italian side would be interested if Rose was available on a free transfer. If he is to get his career back on track, Rose needs to be made a free agent.
