Mark Lawrenson simply cannot understand what Trent Alexander-Arnold is doing at Liverpool right now

Liverpool are heading into a crunch period right now.

Indeed, not only are Liverpool heading into the business-end of a title race, the Reds are also running out of time to resolve some of their key contract situations.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all out of contract in the summer, and, as of yet, there’s been no concrete news on any of these players.

Salah’s contract talks are going well, while Van Dijk is expected to re-sign with Liverpool.

However, it’s been radio silence on the Trent Alexander-Arnold front.

Alexander-Arnold says his decision will be made privately without any media attention.

“I have been at the club 20 years now, I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public – and this one won’t be either,” Alexander-Arnold said.

Speaking on Off The Ball, Mark Lawrenson has been discussing Alexander-Arnold’s situation, claiming that he simply doesn’t understand why he’s being so secretive.

Mark Lawrenson baffled by Trent Alexander-Arnold contract stance

Lawrenson spoke about the fact Alexander-Arnold is being secretive about his future.

The pundit says that he doesn’t understand why the defender is being so quiet, calling for him to step up and be transparent.

Alexander-Arnold has been linked to Real Madrid recently.

“To be honest with you, if he is I’d like him to say that I’m staying until the end of the season and the I’ll look elsewhere. Liverpool fans will say ‘great, he’s won everything.’ But this thing about not saying anything. I don’t get it,” Lawrenson said.

“Stand up and be a man and say ‘look this has been fab, I’ve loved every minute of it. I’m a local lad but I’m going to go elsewhere.’ You know what, good luck to you.

“There wouldn’t be a backlash at all, he’s one of their own, he’s a brilliant footballer. He’s a right-back they can be replaced. They have one in there already but they can probably buy another one. I don’t think there will be any backlash, no I don’t.”

How Liverpool fans reacted when Steven Gerrard almost left

Lawrenson says that there wouldn’t be any backlash if Trent Alexander-Arnold announced he was leaving his boyhood club on a free transfer.

However, Liverpool fans can be just as tribal as any other fanbase when something like this happens.

Indeed, via , fans burnt a Steven Gerrard shirt outside of Anfield when the midfielder was linked with Chelsea.

Gerrard was one of Liverpool’s own back then, and he wasn’t even set on leaving – he actually ended up staying.

With that in mind, it’s easy to understand why Alexander-Arnold may want to keep things quiet. After all, he has to focus on winning the Premier League with Liverpool and any outside noise is an unwanted distraction.

Alexander-Arnold’s mind doesn’t appear to be made up yet, but even if he had made his decision, his best bet may be to stay quiet.
