Mark Guidi says there’s seven players Celtic need to sell in the January transfer window
As well as bringing players into Celtic, Brendan Rodgers has been told that there are at least seven he needs to let go in order to save the club £100k per week in wages.
That’s according to Mark Guidi at least. The journalist was speaking about the fringe players that are currently playing for Celtic.
He was asked if he thought they were being played because they were getting a chance or was it out of necessity due to the injuries Brendan Rodgers has had to deal with.
Guidi said [], “It’s out of necessity. And some of the players that aren’t getting a game are clearly not good enough.
“I think we could all say, there are six or seven players that Celtic could get rid of that’s probably about £100k per week.
“There’s just deadwood setting there and that’s what the manager needs to do.”
Can Celtic save £100k per week in January?
£100k per week. That seems a hell of a lot of money that could be saved on seven players leaving the club.
Celtic are one of the biggest payers in the Scottish Premiership so I decided to take a little deep dive to see where this £100k is coming from. All salary figures are taken from .
Let’s assume that Rodgers is willing to let go the following players leave in January:
Nat Phillips: £24k p/w
David Turnbull: £16k p/w
Joe Hart: £15k p/w
Benjamin Siegrist: £15k p/w
Gustaf Lagerbielke: £14k p/w
James McCarthy: £14k p/w
Yuki Kobayashi: £8k p/w
Total: £106k per week

That’s an astonishing figure to be spending on players who are likely to leave at the end of the season or have made no contribution under Rodgers.
Even if you take out Joe Hart and David Turnbull and replace them with Alexandro Bernabei (£5.5k but reported recently at £8k) and Mikey Johnston (£8k) that still comes to an incredible £93k per week being wasted on players not contributing to Celtic.
Clearly, there is work needing to be done here and Celtic would be better off spending that kind of money on three quality players. Will they do it? The fans only need to wait a couple of weeks to find out.
