Marco Silva was right to pursue Everton star Abdoulaye Doucoure

There are not many things Marco Silva did at Everton that fans at Goodison Park will remember with particular fondness.

The Portuguese struggled to get any consistency out of the Toffees during his reign in charge of the club.

However, one thing he desperately wanted to do during his time at Merseyside is now being justified.

Silva was desperate to bring his former Watford midfield dynamo Abdoulaye Doucoure to Everton.

In the summer of 2019, Everton made two offers for Silva but Watford refused to budge with tension between both clubs still high from the pursuit of Silva.Everton were willing to spend around £36 million on the Frenchman.

A year later, and with Watford relegated to the Championship, they finally relented and Everton got their man for a fee in the region of £25 million.

Silva had already been given his marching orders so Carlo Ancelotti is the manager who has benefitted from the persistence of Everton in the hunt for Doucoure.

The 27-year-old has been in fine form for Everton this season and has been a driving force in the club’s rise to fourth in the Premier League table.

Silva was clearly right about one thing during his time at Everton. Making moves for Doucoure was a worthwhile pursuit.
