Everton manager Marco Silva has explained that summer addition Fabian Delph brings a real leadership to the team and wants to see the same qualities from some of his other players.
The Toffees signed Delph for £9million ( from Manchester City and has started well at Goodison Park.
He was missing at the early stages of the new campaign, but has a 100 per cent win record in the two matches he’s played so far for the Merseyside club.
The 29-year-old came into the side to impress against Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup, while he delivered a man of the match display in the Premier League against Wolverhampton Wanderers before the international break.
Delph has immediately appeared to have struck a decent partnership alongside Andre Gomes in the centre of the park and it’s clear to see why he’s been part of a successful Manchester City group.
The left-footed central midfielder is extremely comfortable in possession, but has an ugly side to his game too with his tackling and work-rate.
Silva has discussed the summer recruit and hailed him for his influence on the pitch.
“Not just his football qualities… he can give us different things and will be an important player for us,”
“I don’t just want it in that position from Fabian – it is really important midfield players, everyone in the central zone, have that leadership and can command the team in some moments.
“I don’t want to put the focus only on Fabian because I want the others to come and take responsibility as well.”
TBR’s View:
Delph is only two games into his Everton career, but it seems like he’s got supporters on his side and he may be a key player this campaign.
The all-action midfielder brings a lovely balance to the Toffees side and his experience is already beginning to shine through.
With his leadership on display, could he be a future captain at Everton.
Delph has captained England’s senior team once in a game against USA and is a vocal presence in the midfield that is certainly captain material.
If current captain Seamus Coleman does drop out of the team at anytime for Djibril Sidibe, Delph would be a decent candidate to step in as a leader.
