Marcelo Bielsa reacts to Pablo Hernandez’s display on Leeds farewell

Marcelo Bielsa has lauded Pablo Hernandez following his performance in his final Leeds United appearance, insisting – – that he showed why he deserved more minutes for the Whites this season.

It was an incredibly emotional day at Elland Road. Leeds announced ahead of Sunday’s clash with West Brom that both Hernandez and Gaetano Berardi would be leaving this summer.

Bielsa handed the two club heroes spots in the starting lineup against the Baggies. And neither player let him down with assured displays as Leeds won 3-1.

Hernandez came close to scoring on a number of occasions before he was substituted, along with Berardi, to an incredible reception during the second-half.

It was a performance that may have left some fans wondering why he is being allowed to leave this summer. And Bielsa suggested after the win that he really proved a point.

“I thought it was an unforgettable game,” he said, . “It was a great homage to two players who stopped belonging to Leeds. The responses got, only players who gave a lot deserve it.

“Players of the roots, the performance of Pablo today indicates he deserved more minutes than the ones I gave him this year. Berardi after such a long time without playing, showed he can still be good.”

No Leeds fan can begrudge Hernandez a move after the amazing service he has given. A look on social media will show many supporters comparing the 36-year-old with Gordon Strachan.

No single player was more influential in guiding Leeds back into the Premier League. His goal at Swansea last season will not be forgotten in a hurry.

And while he did not score on Sunday, it was fitting that Hernandez bowed out having pulled the strings for the 70 minutes he spent on the pitch.
