Marcelo Bielsa praised Leeds 24-year-old after Brighton defeat
Leeds United were beaten 2-0 on the road to Brighton this afternoon, but one player did earn praise from manager Marcelo Bielsa for his performance.
Pascal Gross and Danny Welbeck were on the scoresheet for Brighton, who moved 10 points clear of the relegation positions in the Premier League to all-but guarantee their safety in the division for another year.
The Whites went into Saturday’s game with strong form behind them, but will now need to lift themselves for their final four matches of the season.
Bielsa decided to give credit to Leeds player Koch for his contribution against Brighton.
With Kalvin Phillips absent, versatile star Koch dropped into his position as the defensive midfielder trying to dictate play in front of the back.
The 24-year-old is a centre-back by trade, but he tried to do a job in the midfield on the weekend.
“I think the performance of Robin Koch was positive. I don’t link the defeat to the absence of Kalvin Phillips,” Bielsa told (5:20pm, 1 May).

TBR’s View:
Koch delivered a spirited performance at the weekend against Brighton, but it’s hard to rate any player above a 6/10 due to a poor overall effort.
The Germany international can be emergency cover in midfield, but there is no doubt he’s more effective at centre-back and that’s where his long-term future needs to be at Elland Road.
Koch is competing alongside Liam Cooper, Diego Llorente and Pascal Struijk for the two starting centre-half positions. It will be interesting to see which duo establish themselves as the first picks at the beginning of next season.
