Marcelo Bielsa should hand Leeds youngster Leif Davis full Premier League debut

While Leeds United can be extremely happy with their performance against Chelsea on Saturday, Marcelo Bielsa was perhaps left with food for thought on a couple of issues.

The Whites lost Patrick Bamford to injury during the first-half, so the supporters will be desperate for a positive update on his condition.

Meanwhile, it arguably proved to be a day in which Gjanni Alioski’s weaknesses as a left-back were exposed.

Of course, he was always going to be in for a tough day given the quality Chelsea possess. But the stalemate arguably highlighted the need to sign a specialised left-back in the summer if Leeds are going to progress.

Alioski does not appear to be the long-term answer. So with Leeds in a secure position right now, perhaps Friday is the perfect time for Bielsa to hand Leif Davis his full Premier League debut if he is available.

The 21-year-old has made a couple of appearances since promotion. Remarkably, the only two opponents he has faced are the current top two.

Bielsa obviously feels that he is not yet the finished article. But he has been a regular fixture on the bench this season, so he certainly sees something in him.

Davis appears to have the potential to be a more prominent member of the side in the future. So now may be the time to put greater faith in him.

It was less than a year ago that Bielsa’s faith in Pascal Struijk set the under-23 starlet on the path to becoming a key part of the first-team picture.

Davis should be the player to now follow in his footsteps.
