Marcelo Bielsa delivers honest verdict of interim Tottenham manager Ryan Mason

Marcelo Bielsa has told his pre-Tottenham Hotspur press conference – – that he does not see a huge difference in Spurs despite a change in manager following Jose Mourinho’s sacking, as Leeds take on Ryan Mason’s Spurs on Saturday.

The Whites will be looking to get back to winning ways after they lost their first Premier League match in seven games last weekend, being beaten 2-0 by Graham Potter’s Brighton. Leeds were beaten 3-0 by Spurs in the reverse fixture.

Mason has impressed since taking interim charge. Although they lost narrowly in the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City, they have looked excellent in the Premier League – beating both Sheffield United and Southampton.

Speaking to his press conference, Bielsa was asked by the media about interim boss Mason – with Mourinho since signing a three-year deal at Serie A side AS Roma. He stated that there are little differences, but believes Spurs are in better form.

“Not so much,” Bielsa said, if he had seen any differences. “It’s the same players. Of course, if they beat an opponent by four goals, the evaluation increases. It’s not the same to evaluate them after the final against City than this one against Sheff Utd.

“Needs a different evaluation. City game leave certain conclusions that differ from the conclusions of the last Prem game. We can’t deny the 4-0 win showed they’re in a different kind of form.”

TBR’s view – Have Spurs changed under Mason?

What is clear – and made clear in no abundant terms by Gareth Bale in post-match interviews – is that Mason is giving Spurs more freedom than Mourinho ever gave the Welshman and the rest of the Spurs attackers.

It might suit Leeds. The Whites are renowned for playing better when there are gaps in behind and if Spurs go on the front foot, Leeds will have a chance to pick the North London club off. But there are certainly initial signs of a different style under Mason.
