Marcelo Bielsa applauds Leeds star who had a ‘presence’ despite 5-1 Old Trafford defeat

Leeds United suffered a crushing defeat away to Manchester United on Saturday afternoon, but Whites manager Marcelo Bielsa was still complimentary in his post-match comments of Robin Koch.

The Whites endured a rough start to the new Premier League season by losing 5-1 in front of a packed Old Trafford crowd.

Luke Ayling’s stunning equalising goal at the start of the second half looked like it would shape up a real contest, but the hosts had too much quality in the end.

Bruno Fernadnes (three), Mason Greenwood and Fred all scored for Man United. In addition, Paul Pogba picked up four assists.

Leeds boss Bielsa wasn’t completely downbeat though after his team’s weekend result, so did give a positive mention to Koch.

The 25-year-old German star is a centre-back by trade. However, he played 90 minutes in a midfield position.

“I liked how [Koch] played. I thought he was a dynamic player, he was present, he was willing, committed. He made lots of effort and he had presence throughout the game,” Bielsa .

Leeds need to stick with Robin Koch as a defender

Koch has the versatility to play numerous positions if needed, but Leeds shouldn’t be relying on him as a midfield option moving forward.

He’s proven his class at Elland Road as a centre-back, so needs to be back in that role immediately.

Kalvin Phillips, along with Adam Forshaw, were both unused substitutes for Leeds against Man United. They are the duo to fill the deep-lying midfield position when they both get back to full fitness.

Koch should be focusing on the battle to nail down a starting defensive spot.
