Marcelo Bielsa admits he may be wrong about Leeds’s Ryan Edmondson
Marcelo Bielsa has admitted, , that he may be wrong to not use Ryan Edmondson more, and suggested that he has not thought about letting the youngster leave Leeds United on loan.
Edmondson is yet to make a first-team appearance for the Whites this season. However, he has continued to impress with the under-23s as he rapidly approaches double figures for the campaign.
And with the first-team struggling to make the most of their chances once again this season, plenty of fans have asked for the 18-year-old to get an opportunity following Eddie Nketiah’s return to Arsenal.
Bielsa seemed to concede that he may be making an error not using the teenager as he explained why he is yet to feature this season.
“Thirty-five players are working with us and we look at everyone of them, after I choose what I think are the best players,” he said, . “Of course, he has limits and he recognises them.
“Maybe Edmondson is the best goalscorer on the team and he should play instead if Bamford and I am wrong, but what everybody has to know, and no doubt, everything Bamford does in training and matches, I am looking at it. I watch all of Edmondson’s training and matches. His effort and everything he does. After I evaluate and I take decisions. Maybe they are wrong.”
The Leeds boss was then asked whether there had been any consideration about loaning the youngster out this month.
“We didn’t consider this possibility. He is 18. The process of the development of one young player is linked with his own reality,” he added.
TBR View – Quiet January may benefit Edmondson
In terms of goals, Edmondson could not be doing too much more to catch Bielsa’s eye. He has led the line superbly for Carlos Corberan’s side. And he has shown that he has an ability to put himself in the right position at the right time.
Should Leeds sign a new striker in January, Edmondson may be set for more frustration. And perhaps he will consider pushing for a loan move.
But perhaps he may be a big beneficiary should Leeds fail to bring in a new striker this month.
It would be asking a lot of Patrick Bamford to play every game between now and the campaign’s conclusion.
Of course, Bielsa has shown that he is willing to use other players up front. The likes of Jack Harrison, Helder Costa and Tyler Roberts have led the line at various stages, either in the Championship or in pre-season.
But if Leeds fail to make a new signing and Edmondson keeps knocking on the door, perhaps that opportunity will come for the starlet.
And it appears that plenty of fans would back Edmondson to take any chance he gets with both hands.
