Marcel Brands admits he’s delighted with progress of Everton teenager Anthony Gordon

Everton’s director of football Marcel Brands has claimed he hopes to see Anthony Gordon become the next young player to nail down a starting position at Goodison Park.

Gordon, who is an academy graduate that was born in Liverpool, is a highly-rated attacker that has made the step up to the first-team squad in the last year.

The 19-year-old winger has already made 16 senior appearances for the Merseyside giants and has been given a path to the main group by manager Carlo Ancelotti.

He is a skilful wide player with plenty of pace and trickery, but he’s yet to nail down a position in a competitive squad and it’s been a tough individual season so far.

Gordon featured regularly for Everton in the Premier League during the last couple of months of last season, but has played just three first-team games so far this campaign and two of them were in the Carabao Cup.

With Richarlison and James Rodriguez currently occupying the wide positions in the XI, it’s a difficult task for Gordon to try force himself in.

But senior Everton figure Brands has spoken very highly of teenager Gordon and sounds excited about his future:

“I’m really happy with the development now of Anthony Gordon. He’s a young player from the academy so I hope he will be the next one that can be a real starter in the near future. I’m really hopeful for that so I will really support that,”

TBR’s View:

Gordon should have his eyes of trying to overtake the likes of Bernard and Alex Iwobi in the pecking order for the wide positions, as right now he’s not a regular in the squad and stuck in a difficult situation.

There is no doubt he’s a talented youngster that’s got the ability to get back in Ancelotti’s good books and he injects some real directness when he plays, but perhaps Everton should look into a possible loan in January if his game time doesn’t improve during a busy December schedule.
