Marc Guehi might have just edged closer to Liverpool move as Crystal Palace prepare record bid
Liverpool are working on more attacking reinforcements, but the defence remains a concern.
TBR Football have been informed that Richard Hughes is trying to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle after the 25-year-old decided to stop showing up at the training ground.
A deal worth over £120m is possible, but it does little to solve the fact that Arne Slot only has three central defenders to call upon in Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez after Jarell Quansah was sold to Bayer Leverkusen.
Liverpool are monitoring Marc Guehi as a potential solution to this lack of defensive depth, and a move could be on after Crystal Palace started to advance on a deal for Yann Bisseck of Inter Milan.
Crystal Palace ready to bid for Yann Bisseck as replacement for Marc Guehi
in Italy now state that Crystal Palace are ready to offer €32m (£27.6m) to sign the Germany international.
The Italian news outlet believe Crystal Palace are ‘serious’ about signing Bisseck – who Chelsea also looked at earlier this summer – and Inter Milan are open to a sale, as the funds would enable them to push on with a move for Ademola Lookman and other targets.
Oliver Glasner already has Maxence Lacroix, Chris Richards, Chadi Riad, Nathaniel Clyne, Jefferson Lerma and Mofe Jemide to fill three positions at the back without mentioning Guehi, so an expensive deal for the Inter Milan No.31 would surely only happen in order to replace the England international.
Should Inter Milan accept the £27.6m bid, it would be a record deal for Crystal Palace if it comes as a lump sum – surpassing the initial £27m spent to sign Christian Benteke from Liverpool.
The signing of Eddie Nketiah could reach £30m through performance-related bonus payments, but was an initial £25m deal.
TBR Football understand Liverpool have tracked Guehi for over 12 months and remain keen on signing the 25-year-old.
Liverpool may even need two new centre-backs
The attacking department at Liverpool is receiving significant investment, with £116m going on Florian Wirtz and £69m being spent on Hugo Ekitike – while a further £120m could be splashed on Isak.
However, the centre-back department is a worry.
Van Dijk turns 35 next year, while Konate is currently stalling on a new contract with his deal expiring in 11 months.
Gomez also has a patchy fitness record, making it hard for Slot to rely on the England international, so perhaps it would be wise for Liverpool to sign one more centre-back in addition to Guehi.
