Manuel Pellegrini provides update on West Ham defender Winston Reid

West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini has issued an update on forgotten defender Winston Reid.

The New Zealand international has been out of the picture at the club since sustaining a knee injury in March 2018.

The 31-year-old, who is into the final 12 months of his contract at the London Stadium, was supposedly nearing a return to the first-team after playing against Manchester City and Newcastle United in pre-season, but things then went quiet.

It’s all been very mysterious, but on Thursday Pellegrini let fans know the latest on Reid’s condition.

: “The problem with Winston is that, two or three times before when he was ready to start, he had another muscle injury.

“We need to be calm and patient with him. He will start playing with the U23s and, as soon as he’s able to play with the first-team, he’ll be involved also.”

The U23s are next in action against Cheltenham Town in the Leasing Trophy on Tuesday.

It’s going to be vital, once he does return, for him to stay fit – with the fragile player’s contract running down, any hopes of an extension will surely be dependent on him staying out of the treatment room.

£70,000-a-week star Reid () has been a miss for the Irons, although Angelo Ogbonna and Issa Diop have struck up a decent partnership in his absence, and Fabian Balbuena also did well last term.
