Manchester United Summer Transfer Targets Episode 2

With the end of the 2012/13 season fast approaching, the summer transfer window will be open and Manchester United will no doubt set out to make more improvements to their squad.

There have been rumours, talks of deals and names everyone wants to see join the Red Devil’s current set-up. Here’s a look at the players who have been linked with a move to Old Trafford within the last few weeks.

Radamel Falcao

Falcao has been linked with a number of top clubs from across Europe in recent weeks and is believed to be one of Chelsea’s top summer transfer targets.

The Colombia international has also been linked with Juventus, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, but reports in Spain last week suggested United were looking to win the race to secure his services when the transfer window reopens.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson at the weekend played down talk of a move for Falcao, but according to the Daily Mail, the Scot sent chief scout Jim Lawlor to Spain on Sunday to watch the highly-rated forward score twice in Atletico’s 5-0 win at home to Granada.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone last week admitted he expects clubs to be interested in signing his star striker this summer.

Falcao, who is under contract until 2016, has a €60million buy-out clause in his contract at the Vicente Calderon.

Robert Lewandowski

Although Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed that Bayern are in a strong position to sign the Poland forward, Lewandowski has told associates he prefers a move to the Premier League, with United his favoured option ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea, who have also monitored him.

Dortmund informed Lewandowski of a United bid last summer and, although the Champions League semi-finalists rejected the offer, the 24-year-old made it clear to the club that he wanted the transfer to be sanctioned.

The Lewandowski camp has been made aware of United’s interest, but while Bayern have no obstacles barring their way to a deal, United have conceded that they would have to create space for another forward to be added to Ferguson’s squad.

Continued uncertainty over Rooney’s Old Trafford future is likely to be resolved at the end of the season, with the player keen for a definitive answer on whether a new contract will be offered this summer.

Yohan Cabaye

Cabaye has been one of the Premier League’s best midfielders ever since making his move from French side Lille in 2011. The 27-year-old is a perfect deep-lying playmaker, who can pick out passes, but also read the game well and make the necessary tackles.

While Michael Carrick might be a similar player to Cabaye, a midfield partnership of the two in the middle could work out quite well with understanding.

Ferguson, has set his eyes on Cabaye, and is ready to make a bid of £20 million ($30 million), according to the Daily Mirror.

Thiago Alacantra

Furthermore, Manchester United will reportedly re-ignite their interest in Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara this summer, after his father revealed he is ready to quit the club.

United have been keen on the Spain international for the past three years and had a £15million bid rejected 18 months ago.

The 21-year-old was determined to establish himself in the first team set-up but now has accepted it is time to move on.

Nemanja Matic

According to the Guardian, United have made their first inquiries about Nemanja Matic’s availability at Benfica as Sir Alex Ferguson renews his long and exhaustive search for another top-quality central midfielder.

Ferguson’s scouts have been alerted to the impressive performances from Matic that have helped Benfica to the top of the Portuguese league as well as the Europa League semi-finals.

However, the Serbia international might come with a prohibitive price. Benfica, aware of interest in their player, awarded him a new five-year contract in January, in part to strengthen their own position when it came to negotiating with potential buyers.

Raphael Varane

Sir Alex has asked the Manchester United board to “pay any price” for Real Madrid’s £25million-rated centre-back Raphael Varane.

The 19-year-old France international impressed Ferguson in the Champions League clash between the two sides at Old Trafford and the United boss is intent on snapping him up.

Varane has displaced Pepe in Madrid’s back four and reports from Spain suggest United would be willing to offer in the region of €30m (£25.2m) for his signature.

The talented teenager is one of the hottest prospects in European football and would be the perfect long-term replacement for Nemanja Vidic.

Madrid will be keen to keep the prospect and although he is under contract until 2017, Ferguson’s interest could prompt Bernabeu chiefs to offer him a new deal.

Jordy Clasie

Feyenoord midfielder Clasie, 21, is one of the hottest prospects in Dutch football and he has already played five times for the Netherlands.

United are reportedly keen to bring the ‘Dutch Xavi’ to the Premier League.

However, the Red Devils will face competition to sign the £6.5 million-rated man, as Arsene Wenger is keen on bringing him to the Emirates Stadium while Tottenham boss Andre Villas Boas could see Clasie as the perfect long-term replacement to Scott Parker.

Christian Eriksen

Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen has dropped the clearest hint yet that he is planning to leave Amsterdam in the summer by insisting that his potential transfer fee is ‘for the clubs’ to arrange, when commenting on talk his asking price is 20 million Euro.

The talented Danish schemer has just over 12 months left to run on his current contract with Ajax and, thought the club have offered him a new deal, he has put any talks over an extension on ice until the summer.

The expectation is that Eriksen is waiting to see what offers arrive – and he should not be short of suitors.

Sir Alex Ferguson has previously gone on record as admitting Eriksen is a player he rates highly. Could United make a move for the Dane this summer?
