Manchester United: Smalling could leave; Real Madrid man offered contract; interest in defender cools

After Chris Smalling returned to action after nearly two months out of action with a toe injury, the England international has been linked with a move away by the . The newspaper reports that the defender is attracting interest from Everton who are prepared to spend to improve their defence in January.

United are not keen to sell Smalling, who has worn the captain’s armband on a number of occasions this season, but may allow him to leave should they decide to sign Victor Lindelof.

However, his hopes to remain at Old Trafford are unlikely to be helped by news in the  that central defender Pepe is set to be formally offered a contract by Manchester United as he is now free to negotiate with the Red Devils as he enters the last six months of his current deal at Real Madrid.
