Manchester United sign Paul Pogba for a world record fee – Twitter reacts
After one of the longest ever transfer sagas, Manchester United have completed the signing of Paul Pogba from Juventus, for what is believed to be a world record fee in the region of £90 million to £100 million.
The 23 year old will now return to Old Trafford, where he previously spent three years coming through the youth ranks and on the fringes of the first team, before he was sold to the Italian club for a fee of £800,000.
Now respected as one of the world’s most exciting central midfielders, Pogba reached the Euro 2016 final with his country this summer and the Champions League final last year, alongside four Serie A titles, two Italian Cups and two Italian Super Cups in his four year spell in Turin, where he made 178 games, scoring 34 goals and assisting 43 others in the process.
Now, he looks set to become the heartbeat of Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side as they hope to relaunch a title challenge for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, following the failed spells of David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal which returned just one FA Cup trophy.
The Red Devils have spent big this summer, not only on Pogba, but also on Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and will expect an immediate return on the investments made by the club to strengthen their weakest areas.
There is also a touch of embarrassment though, having sold the player just four years ago, and now re-purchasing him at well over 100 times the price. United fans will not be bothered by that, and are excited to see one of the best players in world football, who was also reportedly chased by the likes of Real Madrid, and that is a common sentiment for all Premier League fans.
For such a substantial fee and after such a long and drawn out transfer, the reaction was always bound to be huge. Here is how Twitter reacted to the news:
