Manchester United round-up: Wayne Rooney set for summer exit; Jose Mourinho wants reunion with Chelsea’s Willian; Bastian Schweinsteiger departs
The say that Wayne Rooney is expected to complete a free transfer to his former club Everton in the summer transfer window to bring an end to his stay in Manchester, having joined the club as an 18-year-old in 2004. Manchester United are said to be happy to allow him to leave for free, with no fee expected to change hands.
Rooney played for both sides in his testimonial fixture between the two clubs last summer and is now expected to accept a pay cut and earn £150,000 per week back at his home club on Merseyside, where he previously came through the ranks as a youngster as he shot to fame.
say that Jose Mourinho has drawn up a shortlist of players to fire Manchester United up the Premier League table, with one of his former players on that list in the form of Chelsea forward Willian. The Brazilian was one of few to shine under Mourinho in his final season in London.
The Brazilian has found his opportunities limited this season, being forced to compete with Pedro and Eden Hazard on the wings. Mourinho is thought to be hoping to bring in players proven in the Premier League after having to wait months for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to adapt to life in England, with Willian being the perfect example.
One man who had bags of experience but fell out of favour this season at Old Trafford was Bastian Schweinsteiger. Now, the German has completed a move to MLS side Chicago Fire, as he posted on to thank his team-mates, staff and fans for their support whilst at the club, saying:
“Dear fans of Manchester United, I have decided to make a permanent move to Chicago Fire. I really wish I could have done more for you but it was time to make a change. Thank you especially for your amazing support during my time at the club, I will never forget it. Having been part of the team that won the FA Cup this makes me very proud. I would also like to say thank you very much to the wonderful fans, the atmosphere and also the great staff at the club – but especially my fellow players. Thank you very much. I believe, and I am sure, that Jose Mourinho and his team will bring back the trophies to Manchester United soon so I wish you all the best.”
The World Cup winner had a disappointing spell in England, making only a handful of appearances this season after being frozen out by Mourinho, but will be fondly remembered for his attitude whilst at the club.
