Manchester United round-up: Rival turns down Ronaldo; Rooney’s future seems decided; Munich forward linked

Manchester United were dealt good news as Bayern Munich withdrew from the race for Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. The German club released a statement on their  suggesting that they would not be pursuing the Portuguese star, who is currently at the Confederations Cup, this summer.

The club’s CEO Karl Rummenigge said: “We are accustomed to speculating intensively on possible inflows and outflows during the transfer period. As a rule, we do not comment on these rumors. But now, in the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, we want to clarify once and for all that this rumor has no basis and must be referred to the realm of fable.”

This will please United supporters, somewhat, although it was never expected that Ronaldo would be joining the German club. Instead, Paris Saint Germain offer the biggest threat to the Red Devil’s in terms of signing the 32-year-old.  have suggested that the French outfit and Premier League rivals Chelsea are after his signature.

However, in the same report, the superstar is believed to have told his agent Jorge Mendes to ‘do everything possible’ to secure a deal back to his former side.

If Ronaldo was to return, it is likely that he would reunite with his former teammate, Wayne Rooney, who is expected to stay at the club this summer.

suggest that Jose Mourinho is keen to keep the England international as, even though the club captain is 31-years-old, he appeared 25 times last campaign. While he might not be first on the team sheet, he still has a part to play.

Rooney has also benefitted from the decision to release Zlatan Ibrahimovic and former target, Antoine Greizmann, signing a new contract with Atletico Madrid. After these events in the early weeks of the off-season, Mourinho recognises that the club record goalscorer could provide vital squad depth.

Yet, while Rooney provides depth, Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski may join to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Polish star’s agent, Maik Barthel, told German outlet Kicker – as referenced by and  – that ‘he got no support from the coach‘ in the final game of the season, to help him finish as the Bundesliga’s top scorer.

Reports in the suggest that the striker’s war of words with Bayern Munich has given United fresh hope in bringing him to the club this summer. It is reported that Lewandowski suits the criteria the Old Trafford board is after, as he is a ‘star name’.
