Manchester United round-up: Paul Pogba slams expectations; David De Gea deal only for exchange; Anderlecht draw reaction
Paul Pogba has spoken to the press to hit out at what is being expected of him in his debut season after an £89 million return to Old Trafford as he told :
“The people are looking at me. They judge me for not scoring goals and stuff like this. If I was scoring goals, the people wouldn’t talk like this but it’s football. We can forget about the transfer fee. It’s in the past… It’s fine because they want me to score goals because of the mountain of the transfer.”
The Frenchman has been disappointing in his debut campaign since rejoining the club from Juventus and has so far failed to live up to what was expected for a club record fee signing, but Pogba is clearly confident in his own abilities and satisfied with his performances.
He could be joined in midfield next season by Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos, according to the , as they claim that United will only entertain any approach for goalkeeper David de Gea from the Spanish club if they involve an exchange for the German. Kroos was previously a target for the Red Devils but opted to move to the Bernabéu instead of Old Trafford.
It seems unlikely that Zinedine Zidane will be prepared to part ways with his influential midfielder, but equally Jose Mourinho will not want to allow his first choice goalkeeper to leave the club as he builds his team into a force in England.
De Gea was back on the bench for the club last night in the Europa League after missing the weekend fixture against Sunderland through injury, and Mourinho was happy with his team’s draw with Anderlecht in Brussels as he told the post-match:
“The result is positive – to play at home with an advantage, to start the game with an advantage, it is a good result but I think the result should be much better. We can only blame ourselves because we had an easy game to play in the second half and we didn’t play in attack with that instinct.
“We lost the ball easily too many times, we stopped our counter-attacks because of sloppy decisions, sloppy touches of the ball and then we gave them opportunity to have some counter-attacks. But luckily our defenders were very much in the game and they resolved all of these problems.
“But if I were a Manchester United defender I would be very upset with the attacking players because they have to kill the game and they didn’t.”
Henrikh Mkhitaryan opened the scoring to make it two goals in as many games for the Armenian after Jesse Lingard went close as he hit the post early on. However, Leander Dendoncker’s late equaliser meant the scores are tied ahead of the second leg.
