Manchester United round-up: Mourinho rocked by defender rejection; midfielder set for new deal; Zlatan to discover fate

Jose Mourinho has been shocked as Benfica defender and January transfer target Victor Lindelof has signed a new contract with the Portuguese club, according to the , who cite a club statement which says that the Swedish centre-half has extended his stay at the Stadium of Light until the summer of 2021.

The 22-year-old was linked with a £38 million move in January but the deal never materialised, and he has since been linked with a move in the summer. However, a new contract does not necessarily mean that a move is off the cards as many other players have shown in recent years.

Another man keen to commit his future to his club is Juan Mata as the  claim that the Spaniard is set to put pen to paper on a new deal to keep him at the club long term with only 16 months left on the 28-year-old’s existing contract with an option for a further year for the club.

Many expected Jose Mourinho to freeze the former Chelsea midfielder out, but he has impressed fans with his good form with nine goals and five assists in 36 games as he has proven to be a hugely important player within the Red Devils’ squad this season with two titles already secured.

Mourinho could be without one of their key men for the next few fixtures though, as the  state that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will find out today whether he will face punishment in the form of retrospective action over his blatant and seemingly deliberate elbow on Tyrone Mings in Saturday’s game against Bournemouth.

Mings could too face punishment for a prior incident which saw him stamp on the Swede’s head, but the FA could still decide not to act on either or both players depending upon the match report that they receive from referee Kevin Friend, who did not take action against either player, with Ibrahimovic already on a yellow card at the time of the incident.
