Manchester United round-up: Ibrahimovic stalls contract talks; plans for De Gea replacement; Mata wants new deal

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is believed to be stalling in talks over extending his stay at the club, according to the , as he is waiting to see how likely it is that the club will qualify for the Champions League next season as he is reluctant to miss out on the elite competition at such a late stage in his career.

It seems unlikely that the Swede would depart, but the arrival of Antoine Griezmann may complicate matters with the 35-year-old unlikely to want to be sitting on the bench in the Europa League after such an illustrious career.

The  also believe that the Red Devils are making moves to prepare for the potential sale of David de Gea to Real Madrid in the summer, with AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma targeted as a replacement. The Madrid club are keen to sign a new first choice goalkeeper and are long term admirers of the Spanish national team’s number one.

Donnarumma, who celebrated his 18th birthday this week, is already capped by the Italian national team and has become a key figure for the San Siro side, but his agent, Mino Raiola, helped to engineer moves for Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the summer and could complete another this year.

Another player with an uncertain future is Juan Mata, as despite playing an important role this season he is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract, with his existing one set to expire next summer. He told the :

“I have two years left on my contract and I would like to stay beyond that. I am happy here and obviously since I came we have won the FA Cup, Community Shield and now we have another chance to win a trophy. I am thinking that the fans are amazing here even in the bad moments so I am thinking what happens if we win the Premier League or Champions League in the future years it will be incredible to celebrate them so I have that in my head.”

The Spaniard is believed to be rushing back from his grandfather’s funeral in Spain to feature in today’s EFL Cup final against Southampton.
