Manchester United round-up: Midfielder contract talks begin; Perisic transfer ruled out; Fellaini holds exit talks
Talks have begun over a new contract between midfielder Ander Herrera and Manchester United, say the . They believe that the Herrera’s representatives met with club officials in the United States to begin discussions over an extension to his current deal, which will expire in 12 months time, although United possess a year extension clause option.
The Spaniard impressed as he became a key player under Jose Mourinho last season and could be in line for a reward of a pay rise. A popular figure with coaching staff and in the dressing room as well as a dominant midfielder, this could be a top priority in the final weeks of the summer for the Red Devils.
However, a move could be off for another top target this summer. quote Inter Milan manager Luciano Spalletti as ruling out any potential sale of winger Ivan Perisic as he explained that United’s interest had faded in recent weeks. He said:
“Until now, there hasn’t been any important contact. There was something you already know about at the beginning of the window. There was no follow-up and so, for me, the topic is over. It’s true what the journalists say: as time goes by, it becomes more and more difficult to replace him with another player. I will strongly oppose the sale of Perisic if an offer comes.”
With only a month left of the transfer window, that could force Jose Mourinho and co. to look elsewhere for additions on the flanks. If Spalletti is correct in his claims that talks were not held in recent weeks, it may suggest that United already have an alternative lined up.
One man who seems set to be on the move this summer is midfielder Marouane Fellaini. Galatasaray sporting director Cenk Ergun confirmed as much as he told Turkish outlet that his club were in talks with the Belgian over a move to Turkey, saying:
“Fellaini will leave Manchester United and he is now in our radar. There will be surprises (in the transfer window), we are in talks with Fellaini. We have made an approach, we are close and if we get Fellaini we will end our pursuit of (Villarreal’s Alfred) N’Diaye. We need a player like Fellaini who can move around in midfield.”
Fellaini was frequently used by Mourinho in his debut season at Old Trafford but never nailed down a regular spot in the team, often being used as a utility man or substitute. With the former Real Madrid boss clearly looking for improvements, Fellaini looks set to be one of those sacrificed to bring in superior players.
