Manchester United pushing hard to sign £51.3m player after he was offered to Liverpool

Manchester United are now looking for midfield reinforcements after bolstering their defence significantly with the signings of Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

Erik ten Hag has also strengthened his attack with the signing of Joshua Zirkzee – although a player who Liverpool were just offered is now being targeted as an option to help the midfield department.

So, who are Manchester United now trying to sign? Let’s take a look…

Manchester United pushing to sign Frenkie de Jong amid Liverpool rumours

A story from in Spain now claims that Manchester United view Frenkie de Jong as the perfect signing to follow the double deal involving De Ligt and Mazraoui.

The Spanish news outlet believe the Red Devils are planning to make a huge effort to sign the Netherlands international – and Barcelona are willing to sell if a bid of €60m (£51.3m) is made.

It comes after Francois Plateau claimed that Barcelona have offered De Jong to Liverpool in a bid to sign Luis Diaz.

SPORT add that the Dutchman himself would ideally like to stay at the Camp Nou, where he opted to remain despite a £56m bid from Manchester United back in 2022.

However, it is explained that Barcelona need to make one major sale to satisfy La Liga’s 1:1 rule and end their Financial Fair Play problems, with De Jong, Raphinha and Ronald Araujo all up for grabs if a suitable bid is made.

Erik ten Hag or Arne Slot could get a bargain

A sum of just £51.3m for a player of De Jong’s quality is a real bargain – especially as he is still just 27 years of age.

That figure actually represents a £13.7m discount on the £65m Barcelona spent to sign the Dutchman from Ajax back in January 2019 – additionally, he has since become a more experienced footballer, so this opportunity really should tempt Manchester United and Liverpool.

Arne Slot desperately needs a new midfielder to replace Wataru Endo in the No.6 role, and the Dutchman knows that after Liverpool were rejected by Martin Zubimendi – who opted to stay at Real Sociedad.

Casemiro is also showing signs of a decline, so Ten Hag has a need for a new central midfielder too, making this £51.3m opportunity a necessity more than something of a luxury signing.
